Frequently asked questions
Can you give me advice on my glass project?
Yes, we’re keen to help out. We have many years of casting experience and encourage you to get in touch with us via email.
Can I depend on the cost of glass staying the same?
No, our prices are subject to change. The cost of casting glass fluctuates due to a variety of factors, including the cost of raw materials, energy prices, and market demand versus supply.
Where can I learn to cast glass?
Check out our Educators page to connect with the teacher closest to your area. Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook page for one-off or specialised courses.
Is there a minimum amount for an order?
Yes, the minimum order quantity is one block. Colour is priced by actual weight, and while the weight of each block of Gaffer glass averages 1.7 kilograms, and each block of Reichenbach glass averages 1.3 kilograms, the weight of each block may vary from your ordered quantity.
Is there an official organisation for glass in New Zealand?
Yes, the New Zealand Society for Artists in Glass (NZSAG) has been in existence for over 40 years and is a great resource for all glass people. There are also many Facebook discussion forums.
Am I able to return my order if my glass is not uniform?
While our manufacturers strive to produce consistent products, the glass is handmade, meaning variation can happen between batches of the same colour. This includes things like bubbles, cords and tonal shifts. Due to these naturally occurring characteristics, MELT 45 is not able to offer free return shipping. However, you are always welcome to return or exchange products in accordance with our Return Policy.
How can I amend my order if I want to add more product?
If you forgot to order something and would like it added to an active order, you’ll need to place a new order and request that both orders are shipped together. If we receive the request in time we will make every effort to combine shipping (though we are not able to guarantee that this will be possible).
Can I obtain a quote for my glass order?
Yes we can provide you a quote but it will be an estimate. The actual cost and resulting invoice is based on accurate weight, dimensions of box, shipping price, and GST, which can only be generated once the order has been processed.
How long will my order take?
After confirmation of your order, we will pack your items and email you an invoice. Once payment has been made we will have your items to the courier within two business days.
My glass hasn’t arrived. What should I do?
If you haven’t received your order within two-three days of payment, please get in touch with us.
Are all the colours of glass available?
We are regularly bringing in shipments throughout the year. Certain colours are sometimes unavailable, but may be arriving on the next shipment. Join our email list to keep updated on colours and availability, or get in touch if you have a project you’d like to discuss with us.
Can I mix glass colours?
Our casting crystal is compatible with crystal consisting of the same lead content. For example: 45% compatible with 45%, and 15% compatible with 15%. Uranium cannot be mixed. Striking colours can be mixed, though we don’t recommend doing this without testing first.
What kind of glass do you have available?
We stock a 45% lead crystal and a 15% lead crystal. Please refer to our About page for further information. While we do not currently have photographs of the Reichenbach 15%, feel free to get in touch if you’d like any further information on this range.
